Australian Football (AFL)

AFL is as physically demanding as sports get. Considering the playing field is enormous, footy definitely required running power and running endurance to cover large amount of space. However, there are many other aspects of the game that mean other physical qualities are also highly important. Large numbers of on-field players mean that contested parts of the game (big bodies to be effective in small spaces, or agile and explosive movers) are still a key focus area for winning games of footy, but also means that fast transitions are also now equally or more important (players with high top speed qualities or strong speed endurance).

The multi-dimensional nature of footy means the game does not discriminate and there are opportunities for all types of athletic profiles to excel in the game, including 'all-rounders' who may not stand out in one area but have no major weaknesses. In no particular order the following physical qualities are all key physical demands of the sport of Australian Football:

  • Aerobic Endurance

  • Repeated Power & Repeated Sprint Ability

  • Running Speed & Agility

  • Contested Skills (Tackling, Evading/Breaking Tackles)

  • Aerial Power and Strength
